online radio

i listened to mainly 3 radio stations before nme radio came online back in june – and the 3 of them all pissed me off one way or another at certain times. since i listen to radio all day and i’m selfish in my listening preferences, radio for me basically can’t be playlist driven – hearing the same bloody 5 songs every other hour drives me up the wall

as nme radio has been so good for the past 6 months i’ve decided next week after the xmas and new year period is over i’m going to listen all day to a different station each day for a week – to get some perspective

radio 1, xfm, virgin (or now as it is known absolute – as in the vodka – talk about sell out), planet rock, indie 103.1 (santa monica – steve jones does the lunchtime show), 102.1 the edge (out of toronto), radio 2 and if i can bring myself to it capital… dont know how long i’ll last with capital though

fascinating conversation between jonesy & pete – hes come up with a brilliant idea. hes launching a website that basically you put in details about yourself and you’ll get a bit of music uniqually generated from that data. he then talked about that that music could be used in new songs or a competition to find the best music – since its done uniqually anyone could win – knowing me i’d get a duff crap thing – but theorectically you could end up with your music used in the next nike ad….

i was hanging around waiting to go out and listening to jones jukebox on indie 103.1 as hes at sxsw & had the stooges and pete townsend on. 40 mins later im still here trying to justify sitting in front of the monitor cos the conversation between jonesy & pete is brilliant…

along with the surfjunkie jeff advert, the current ad for the rockit news site is really starting to basically piss me off …. it goes along the lines of “news about bands you like, news about bands you should like, news about bands you hate and news about bands you should hate”

now call me old fashioned here, but if someone tells me theres a band i should hate or should like i am not going to trust the source to tell me anything about something i might like – are readers of their magazine that shallow that they’ll swallow that ad? – maybe thats a rhetorical question….

<and today the early morning show re-ran yesterdays entire interview with christina ricci as though it was today – huh? this is about 30 minutes of radio airtime – the one saving grace was steve jones’ interview later with baby doll gibson – the woman who was nicked about 8 years ago as a madam with a high profile a-list black book – theres been plenty of blogs about her in the last few days as she ’s just released a book naming and talking 20 of her clients since the court records have been released to the public domain. jonesy was one mentioned and it was great radio to hear him talk to her about it – apparently he’s got the biggest dick out of them all…

anyway, just got this in my email that andy summers is going to appear on jones’ jukebox today which ive just realised is a major bummer as we have a darts match tonight (against the leaders – so its a bit of a major game) – due to the time difference between l.a. and here ‘m not going to be able to catch it… arse..

the past few days ive early cure, stone roses, and tons of stuff that if i was doing a radio show – it’s be exactly like that

watched the office & 30 rock today obviously – once again another couple of great episodes

have just started watching the series “the wire” – the only thing is that it reminds me of watching 24 for the first time (series 5) and realising ive got 4 more *series* to watch before i get up to date…..

updates for the week since ive been really lax due to a major website i ve started

. mon: 24 – another classic episode
.tues: pool – have a guess……. i won one and si won – only problem is that we 10 games….
.playing golf on monday for the first time in i guess 8 weeks – i’ll be on the top of my game then…….
.no darts this week as weve rescheduled to next week which means mon golf, tues pool, darts weds & thurs as well as champions league games tues & weds & eufa on thurs – * phew*
.friday i shall be vegging in bed all day
.the darts team who called the game on us and who we beat the other week – weve drawn them in the next round of the cup – we are amused and looking forward to it
.when can we have a standard freakin css system that all browsers work the same with – ive spent HOURS the past 2 days making sure ie7 & ff2 display the same – fookin nightmare – and i havent even checked on ie6 yet since vista has decided it doesnt want me to install standalone version of previous ie.. arse
.did i mention i watched night at the museum? – it was good in a im bored, open a bottle of red, and chill out for 2 hours & get away from the pc…
.ive taken a load of photos and a few vids of kara the dog pre and post haircut on thursdaybefore i go back to ibiza – however vista doesnt like premiere so the vids will have to wait to be uploaded  (have now uploaded a few photos to the kara section)

some bullet points since its 2.20am

• the highly.trained.althetes won the darts last night – it was a combined cup and league match – we went into the last game 6-5 up so the worst we could do was draw, but yours truly caned it and we won 7-5, which meant we won the cup & league game and it just left jason (our best player) to play a best of 3 against one of the other side for the individual cup series thing – he won it 2-0 – spot on
• the office – jim doing pavlovs dog was brilliant – sometimes watching the office is like watching a really horrible gruesome operation – its excruiating but you cant look away – last night was another great episode
• 30 rock – this gets more surreal by the week
• why do i always click on conan o brien demonoid links in my rss reader to find out who hes had on when i know i wont download the show cos i cant stand him ?
• i really like the silversun pickups
• heard a mexican duo? called Rodrigo Y Gabriela playing live and being interviewed on indie103.1 earlier and they blew me away – i cant explain it but if you like latin guitar music then this is yer stuff – they are no.1 in ireland, no.1 in uk world music charts etc etc and are playing on the same bill as ratm’s reforming gig – their website - and they were so funny ( and produced by john leckie no less as well)

ive been listening to indie 103.1 for a week? and some of the ads just crack me up – the latest one to get my sarcasm treatment is the ais insurance one (though not really cos its crap but because of what it says about car insurance)

(i’m paraphrasing so it wont be word for word)
“your insurance used to be based on your zip code, now its more “likely” to be based on your driving history.. etc etc etc”

now forgive me here but on the former basis i could create unbelievable havoc and as long as i was in the right zip code my insurance would be ok..

theyve just figured out that it maybe a good idea to rate your insurance on er what you actually do behind the wheel of a lethal weapon

i cant think of anther country in the world that gives me so much pleasure at being able to take the piss out of it, and angst about how screwed their system of government is (and this is including one of the best pieces of govn documentation ever – the dec of independence)

how does a country that has the dec of independence manage to completely ignore virtually every single piece of it? – i used to think that the u.s. was lucky cos they had the bill of rights and a constitution and the uk basically had sod all and we were all “subjects” of the queen (ie the state)

and to cap it all, (and what really makes me laugh) is all these eastern europeans etc flocking to the uk for a better life – how can i put this politely? IDIOTS!!

the short term maybe ok but would you really want to be living in the UK or the USA in say 2050 ? – not a chance

this “ad” is really starting to grate

in fact its getting really fuckin annoying – if i lived in santa monica there is no way on earth i would be buying a toyota from that lot – its funny once – but on repeated listens its bollocks (its done like the guy from the branch rings up steve jones all pally like and says theyre expanding blah blah, and to let him know whats happening etc – then they do this embarrasing sing along jingle thing at the end – pass the fuckin sick bag…)

also theres a twat surfer dude reckonging you should go surfing around now because he has really good wet suit stuff and he’s the man – fook right off!!!

and then theres the legalzoom thingy which is some sort of website that enables you to do your own legal stuff – which im sure means that in the end you end up having to go back to them and paying them cos you fucked it all up yourself….

in fact other than these fairly obnoxious 3-4 ads there really arent any others

i spose only in l.a. would you have a weekly show that has a phone-in that basically is ppl phoning in about hollywood legal stuff (copyright, ideas etc) *shakes head*

still going to give it some time though…. the only upside is that because of the time difference most of my day is their graveyard shift – which means i think i get the better part of the deal – ie ive heard the beat, cure, faithless, smiths, pixies, candyskins (jesus – havent heard the candyskins on the radio for years), bauhaus, sd etc etc and virtually no ads

watched last nights the office – i’m going to have to have therapy to get rid of the site of dwight in a bra – urrggg…. – very funny episode though

30 rock has become surreal – that has to be most weirdest episode since tracy´s medication one….
