jon mcclure, the nme & the ark
i’m sort of jon’s side on all of this this but i.m not sure he’s railing against the wrong things and how exactly this new magazine is going to work
i watched jon start ranting about the nme on twitter about 2 or 3 days ago and it was a concerted rant that i wouldve been proud of.. but it was almost the very personal attacks that he didnt want in this new magazine
he twittered at one point that maybe the mag should only do positive reviews – i and i guess many others thought that was a bad idea – after all a review is essentially one persons opinion and if you cant get past that then you are sad and you get what you deserve
“ok so maybe allow bad reviews but not directed at individuals”
fine
but this is the essence
opinions are like arseholes – everyone has one
i said that its human nature for personal feelings to creep into personal reviews – thats just the way it is – to deny that is to ignore human nature
get a balance then
post 3 reviews of everything – one for, one against and one indifferent – link to the track so it streams and let people make up their own mind
and do the same for gig reviews etc
what did piss me off was jon then having a cheap pop at chris martin on nmeradio – whatever you may feel about the magazine the online radio version is a mile away from it and is, beyond anyone else, truer to the original xfm ethos that sammy jaobs started with xfm and then subsequently got hijacked by richard park and his capital radio cronies
jon – please let me know of a better radio station than the nme and i will listen to it for a week and make a judgement (ps ive listened to radio all day for about 20 odd years so have become adept at weeding out bullshit) – otherwise petty attacks on one tweet by one dj is quite frankly – er petty
i read the manifesto that went out today – i just cant immediately see how its going to work financially – but hey sounds good – just dont like the way its being done on personal attacks when there are far more insidious media than the nme….
Burn The Negative – Ibiza Rocks
for some random reason me and the burn the negative starting following each other on twitter and got into a bit of a chat as i’d listened to their stuff on myspace beforehand to check them out and really liked their stuff. so when they played ibiza rocks last tuesday i made a point of introducing myself after they did their support gig
top fookin blokes – had a great chat with them and the next day i thought it would be nice to ask their management if they wanted my photos of their gig as realistically other than the website they werent really going to get used. they came back straightaway and said yes please and have sent me 2xcd edition of their album
the day after both matt & lee from the band Facebooked me and put up my photos and changed their profile pics to ones i’d taken – very flattered
though at one point they insisted we have a joint photo in front of the photo wall – i’d forgottten about that until i saw it pasted up on facebook – i look like a grinning idiot
